Healthy gums don’t bleed!

At Western Dental Hygiene in Melton we provide our patient’s with the highest quality of care and every patient has their gums assessed for gum disease.

We use a special tool that measures the height of the bone underneath the gum and we run this along every tooth. We will do this for every checkup and clean and it is essential.

As a dental hygienist run clinic we are highly trained in dealing with gum disease and we have extensive training in periodontal treatment, with is normally called a “deep cleaning”.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is cause by bacteria in the mouth, this bacteria has been present for too long and has not be removed with brushing or cleaning between the teeth our body then responds to this bacteria but creating inflammation. This inflammation causes gingivitis and then can turn into periodontitis which is more serious.

What is Gingivitis?

The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis, the gums become inflamed, red, swollen and bleed. There is usually no pain or discomfort with gingivitis. However bleeding gums are a sign of disease and healthy gums do not bleed.

Gingivitis is reversible with professional teeth cleaning and good oral hygiene habits. If it left untreated it can progress and cause periodontitis.

What is Periodontitis?

When gingivitis is left untreated the inflammation progresses to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a chronic silent disease that results in the destruction of the bone, gum and supporting structure around an affected tooth.

The result of this bone loss causes a “pocket” or space between the height of the bone and the height of the gum.

If periodontitis is left untreated it can result in the tooth becoming wobbly and it can eventually fall out.
